Family Dog Mediation

Understanding Behavior Through Compassion, Science & Connection
Not just training—true understanding.
Family Dog Mediation goes beyond obedience commands to explore why dogs behave the way they do. It’s a science-based, compassionate approach that focuses on meeting your dog’s individual needs, so both of you can thrive together.

What Is Family Dog Mediation?
Family Dog Mediation is the integration of LEGS Applied Ethology (animal welfare science) into a dog professional's respective work (i.e. training, behavior, veterinary, sheltering, grooming, walking, daycare, breeding, etc.), to the ends that pet dogs are granted the same scope of historically neglected standard considerations and provisions as other captive species of animals by their human caretakers. Family Dog Mediators endeavor to ensure that their clients' dogs enjoy a “good life” (and at the very least, a "life worth living"), where any behavioral challenges are understood and addressed through a comprehensive framework that identifies and resolves any unmet needs or experiences underlying behavioral expressions before attempting to modify behavior to align with human interests. Family Dog Mediation, while emphasizing the human responsibility to guarantee a certain quality of life for their pets, applies the L.E.G.S. Model of Canine Science to facilitate a process of welfare assessment and optimization to account for the distinct needs of all parties - both human and animal - in order to proactively and responsively mediate conflicts that arise between our species in our shared modern lives.
The L.E.G.S. Model of Canine Science
The L.E.G.S. Model stands for:
-
Learning
-
Environment
-
Genetics
-
Self
This comprehensive model helps Mediators assess the whole dog—not just isolated behaviors—while also considering the human side of the relationship. It’s about improving life for both species and finding harmony in the shared modern world we live in.

What Is a Family Dog Mediator?
A Family Dog Mediator (FDM) is an individual who has successfully completed the LEGS Applied Ethology Family Dog Mediation Professional Course and has the basic understanding to apply the LEGS Model in their work with canines, where an LFDM is an individual who has further demonstrated an advanced understanding of the application of the LEGS Model in their respective professional field.
