I have been fortunate to have grown up with dogs - they have been a part of my entire life. I've learned over the years that no two dogs are alike - each is an individual with his own personality, wants and needs. To love a dog means really getting to know him and to value him as the unique creation that he truly is. Give him your love, care and a fulfilled life, and he will repay you one hundred fold.

Hi, I’m Kathy Shumway Lawton, owner and trainer at K-10 Dog Training in Mexico, NY.
I truly can’t remember a time in my life when dogs weren’t part of it. They have always been an important part of my family, my life, and my heart. Over the years, my love for dogs has grown into a passion for helping dogs and their people build stronger, happier relationships.
At one point, our household included six dogs—something I affectionately refer to as being a true foster failure! They were an eclectic group, each with their own personality, history, and needs. Five of them are pictured on our home page. Today, our family includes Strut, our little black rescue and Bella, our Golden Retriever. They continue to keep us smiling and remind me every day why I love what I do.
Living with and caring for dogs with different personalities and backgrounds has taught me that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to training. Every dog is an individual, and every family has its own goals, challenges, and lifestyle.
That philosophy is at the heart of K-10 Dog Training.
My goal is to help you better understand your dog, communicate more effectively, and develop practical skills that can make everyday life together more enjoyable. Whether you are welcoming a new puppy, working through a behavior challenge, or simply looking to strengthen the bond you already share with your dog, I want training to be a positive and rewarding experience for both of you.
At K-10, we focus on building understanding, confidence, communication, and trust—not simply teaching a dog to respond to cues.
Because ultimately, dog training isn't just about changing a dog's behavior. It's about helping dogs and their people understand one another and enjoy life together.
